Hi…

My name is Martyn Rooney, I’m a British 400m runner from Croydon, tall and bearded.

I grew up in a great family, my parents Liam and Marie have worked hard to give myself and my siblings, Helena, Liam and Sean, all the opportunities we needed to succeed.

St James the Great RC Primary school and the John Fisher School, Purley are two great schools for kids and young men to get a great education, learn strong morales and ultimately, become good sportsmen.

My first coach was Mike Fleet, a colourful volunteer coach at Croydon Harriers AC. If you go down to  Croydon Arena on a club night you’ll see him barking, whooping and generally encouraging young kids making sure that they’re training hard whilst enjoying what they’re doing.

At 18 I moved to Loughborough to train with Nick Dakin and study a bit, the studying didn’t go to well, I chose the wrong subject, but the training went really well, I ran a British Junior Record in my first year and then made an Olympic Final in my third year.

I picked up a few medals, a few too many injuries but I managed to establish myself as a regular on the international track circuit, a regular in the Diamond Leagues and the an ever present for GB  at major championships.

After the London Olympics I decided to make a change, after a brief  misguided stint in Birmingham, I moved back to Loughborough to join world renowned coach Rana Reider who had just moved across to work for British Athletics. It worked out perfectly for me as I had considered moving out to Florida to work with him. The training has been tough and after a rough first year which actually finished on a high winning my last 3 races, the third in front of 50,000 people in Brussels, the 2014 season is underway and I’m expecting big things!

Some big things happened in 2014, I became double European Gold Medalist winning the 400m and 4x400m at the European Champs in Zurich. I also got married to my long term partner Kate and we got a puppy named Alice! In a shock move Rana moved on from British Athletics but I’m still using his training programmes, its been tough but I have used this experience to become a better athlete, hopefully 2015 will bring even more success!
